The Maryland Toleration Act

According to Paul Johnson’s A History of the American People (p. 59-60), The Maryland Toleration Act from 1649

not only laid down the principle of the free practice of religion, but also made it an offence to use hostile language about the religions of others, ‘such as Heretick, Schismatic, Idolator, Puritan, Independent, Presbytarian, Popish Priest, Jesuite, Jesuited Papist, Rounhead, Separatist and the like.’

Freedom within certain limits. The road to political correct tyranny, or reasonable limits to ensure the harmony of the free society?
